My professor is the type of person who would find that to be too obvious.

He's also the same guy who gave me a C on a paper because I didn't understand what Sartre was talking about.
I thought that was the point.

To hell with that. Seven Samurai is way better. It's my second favorite samurai/kung fu movie behind this.

To hell with that. Seven Samurai is way better. It's my second favorite samurai/kung fu movie behind this. I can see his reasoning. Seven Samurai is well known. Ikuri is sort of buried behind Kurasawa's samurai films. If I were a teacher, I'd rather my students get into a director by one of his more personal works. Hopefully, they would be moved to check out the more popular films themselves. Plus, I think Ikuri is thematically stronger from a critical standpoint. If you can't tell, I sorta love Ikuri. Takashi Shimura blows it out of the water. Such a great actor.

Just finished Casablanca. We have Glory March 9, Rain Man March 23, Psycho April 6, and Tootsie April 20. To be totally honest with you, I'm a little disappointed by her choices. I was hoping for movies that were a little artsier, for lack of a better word. Plus I've seen 5 of the 6 movies we'll be watching (Tootsie being the exception). Not that they aren't great films. The one that I think I'm most excited about really delving into is Psycho. I'm very interested in what made Hitchcock such a genius in terms of film editing. That is a kind of weak. On the bright side... Just like music, there are many layers to film. You learn/ experience something new every viewing. Hitchcock was a genius on so many levels. He was so meticulous during pre-production that he would take naps during filming because he had every detail planned out. Psycho was a once in generation kind of movie. Killing off the lead actress in the first hour, the ending plot twist, etc. It was totally shocking for it's time. I need to watch it again. 26 – The Servant [1963] [Joseph Losey/Harold Pinter] February 2 – Claire’s Knee [1970] [Eric Rohmer] and/or Dolls [2002] [Takeshi Kitano] 9 – That Obscure Object of Desire [1977] [Luis Bunuel] 16 - discussion/readings/films 23 – Chocolat [1988] [Claire Denis] Essay Due: 1250-1500 word essay on Obscure Object. March 2 – Beau Travail [1999] [ Claire Denis] and/or Marborosi [1995] [Hirokazu Koreeda] 9 – discussion – readings/films – 16 – Spring 23 – The Comfort of Strangers [1990] [Paul Schrader] Essay Due: 1250-1500 word essay on some aspect of films and readings TBD. 30 –Ikiru [ 1952 ] [ Akira Kurosawa] April 6 – After Life [1998] [Hirokazu Koreeda] That's my syllabus for my contemporary cinema class. Weird shit. Geez! This is wild list we got going on here. I've only seen around half of these and I'm pumped to watch the others. I do love Luis Bunuel and Obscure Object is far from his weirdest. Got me a movie I want you to know Slicing up eyeballs I want you to knowI'm loving this tread!!!

We've only watched The Servant and Claire's Knee so far. Claire's Knee is literally about a man, who wait for it, wants to touch Claire's knee. That's pretty much the whole movie.

During the Oscar's "in memoriam" montage, I was shocked to discover that Sally Menke had died. I had no clue. R.I.P to an amazing editor...

I've been working on putting together a list of my top 100 movies. I'm going to go over it for the next week or so and hopefully have it ready to go soon.

How are the film classes going NoD and Karosko? Woah, just saw this. The class is going alright, we watched That Obscure of Desire the other day and it was really good. Funny at points and smart. Liked it a lot. Bunuel(?) had two female actresses switch off for the leads, which I noticed immediately (and a few other did as well because they laughed when the switch happened) but other in the class when asked mentioned they didn't even notice.

Cheeky what did you think of the soundtrack? I thought Grizzly Bear worked well throughout the movie, and the old song he plays in the cheesy motel was great as well.

I agree it worked well, surprisingly enough, I usually prefer variation in that type of film but for the tone it was well set. Penny and the Quarters was a really nice touch; I recognized it because of your post in Song of the Day I also liked the song he played and sang when she was tap-dancing on the street, apparently Ryan Gosling actually wrote that himself. I've been a fan of his work since I saw Remember the Titans and Murder by Numbers, excluding the Notebook.

I really enjoy Bunuel. I don't pretend to understand him but love his stuff. He always brings up weird things about the human mind and plays with them. Pretty brilliant dude.
