....or perhaps it's pronounced 'Yazz'. I think it's a soft 'J'. Either way, let's talk about some of our favorite music from the genre. When it comes to my relationship with jazz, I can appreciate the virtuosity of the players and their ability to really excel at improvisation, but the stuff with some structure mixed in with that aspect is what really interests me. I love when songs have really lovely melodies as the main theme of a song, and can take on an exploratory nature, only to bring it all back together. One of my favorite tunes from my all-time favorite jazz record:

This guy was pretty good. This is from his last album with Atlantic, the monumental Olé Coltrane. The title track is the true gem of the album, not a bit sprawling in its 18 minutes of awesome. But Aisha, penned by his always recognizable longtime pianist McCoy Tyner, has some of the best interaction between Tyner and Coltrane of any song the two did together, and great solos from Freddie HUbbard and Eric Dolphy as well.

Roy Hargrove has been one of my favorite trumpet players since The Vibe came out in the early 90s. Here he is with Brubek and Redman ...or not (embedding disabled)

...or not (embedding disabled) Don't they know were trying to start a revolution here? Hargrove is a monster. The tracks he did on Red,Hot & Riot were just phenominal. God bless Roy Hargrove.

Hargrove is a monster. The tracks he did on Red,Hot & Riot were just phenominal. This is a fact. Especially the Water No Get Enemy with DAngelo, Femi Kuti and Macy Gray. I saw Hargrove back in 09, one of the best shows I've seen in years. Would love to see him with Rh factor, though. Hard Groove is one of my favorite albums of the 00s.

Anyway. I think I need to use Sun Ra as a stepping stone into the world of free jazz. I really dig Eric Dolphy's stuff that I've heard, and of course Albert Ayler. Some of it is just too crazy for me; I guess I haven't quite broken through that barrier of relying on a melody to keep my interest.

^I think that's a youtube thing. Some users decide to be asshats and disable embedding for whatever reason. I bet it's so that people have to go to their page, upping their view count. As if having lots of people look at your page with a vid of somebody else's performance on it makes you talented at...posting vids or something. Anyway, these guys put on a great show:

I love Free Jazz music. It was one of my greatest musical experiences to see Ornette Coleman live.
Also, Pharoah Sanders' album "Karma" is one of the best albums EVER.
