Yeah. I'm a bit biased. I loved the Afghan Whigs, more than you could ever comprehend. His song writing was amazing then but since he started The Twighlight Singers, several years ago, I honestly believe it has been unmatched. Exibit A: Teenage WristbandUnderneath The WavesWhat you got?

I really love that Twilight Singers stuff, garageland. Thanks as always for sharing that. Obviously I don't know enough about Greg Dulli to definitely say one way or the other, but I'll go ahead and give my nominee for greatest songwriter of our generation. Sufjan Stevens I think when you look at songwriting as a whole, Sufjan is definitely in the top tier. He has lyrical prowess combined with the instrumental genius of a madman. And when you consider his full catalog, the diversity from album to album is really astonishing. From the wildly experimental electronica of Enjoy Your Rabbit to the baroque-esque pop folk of Michigan and Illinois, and my god, Age of Adz....it's got to be him.

^^ I think Sufjan is up there. He's on my short list.
I finally got to see him play a few months ago and all I could think was for such a wordy little guy he really doesn't have a lot to say on stage.
But definatly a great songwriter.

He must've been exhausted or something at your show. When I saw him in Asheville on this your, he almost had TOO MUCH (too much, too much) to say on stage. He wouldn't shut up, haha. It was an incredible, unbelievable show, though. Sufjan is definitely on my shortlist and possibly #1; I will have something to contribute to this thread when I am more awake.

I just spent like 15 minutes trying to decide which Ryan Adams to post.

Craig Finn deserves a mention, I think. Even if The Hold Steady's last album was painfully mediocre.
Also, Jeff Tweedy.

Gibbard of Death Cab is high on this list for me. His lyrics are all so heartfelt and so palpable.

This discussion could go on for years. I don't think you could ever find a definitive number one.
I agree with about everything thats been said so far. I like Ben Gibbard. I'd like to throw Clarence Greenwood's name into the hat.
