I keep hearing great things about it. I have a lot of catching up to do in this realm. Still haven't seen Blue Valentine, True Grit, King's Speech, or Black Swan. Need to up my game in a big way.

Loved True Grit. Highly amusing. Plus the young unknown holds her own against some big names very very well.

Haven't seen True Grit yet either, Zapp. Although I vowed to see it the first time I saw the previews. Oh wells.

I'll say it now just as I've been saying it for the last six months: Best movie of 2010=Winter's Bone
Re-watching Citizen Kane for my film class. Love the dialogue in that movie so much that it inspired my avatar <.

Winter's Bone was excellent.
The Social Network is my movie of the year.

Social Network was phenomenal and I hope it wins Best Picture at the Academy Awards (since Winter's Bone doesn't have a puncher's chance; at least it was nominated, though).

I thought Winter's Bone was much too slow. I enjoyed the plot and the acting immensely, but it just dragged a little too long

BANHAMMER
Haha...I think its "slowness" was a result of its naturalistic overtones and made it more intense. The plot moved along at just the right pace for me.

Just watched Malicks' "Badlands".
Holy shite! The film had a slow, deliberate tempo that allowed for the characters to be developed in meaningful layers. The cinematograph was breathtaking. A must see.

Everything Malick had ever done is amazing. Cinematography wise, Days of Heaven might just beat Badlands. The New World was shot using almost all natural light. I think they used some supplemental lights in the windows during the palace interiors.
Has anyone ever watched the behind the scenes extras on The New World? Very interesting documentary on the lengths they went to make the Algonquin world as real as possible.

SFA for the win! Biutiful, Blue Valentine, or the Oscar Nominated Live Action Shorts? I'm thinking Oscar Nominated Live Action Shorts. That will give us a whole category to argue and bet on the winner.

Shoot me. I think Vittorio De Sica gave the world the greatest movie ever with Bicycle Thieves.
I know. I know. It's still a great movie though.

I think Vittorio De Sica gave the world the greatest movie ever with Bicycle Thieves. Fantastic film! I sense an Italian neo-realism run coming on.

AMAZING film! Fantastic film! I sense an Italian neo-realism run coming on. If you want a good documentary on Neo-realism and Italian cinema history, I'd get Scorsese's My Voyage to Italy. Besides being incredibly thought-provoking, it also shows what influenced Scorsese from an early age. www.imdb.com/title/tt0173772/plotsummary

^^ I need to check that out. I love Scorsese, for as cliche' as that may sound. I'm so glad you folks like Bicycle Thieves I get blasted for liking that movie, alot. Blazing Saddles on the other hand is watched a few times a month around here. ... And they never give me crap about it.

We have Glory March 9, Rain Man March 23, Psycho April 6, and Tootsie April 20. To be totally honest with you, I'm a little disappointed by her choices. I was hoping for movies that were a little artsier, for lack of a better word. Plus I've seen 5 of the 6 movies we'll be watching (Tootsie being the exception). Not that they aren't great films. The one that I think I'm most excited about really delving into is Psycho. I'm very interested in what made Hitchcock such a genius in terms of film editing.

Odd that your doing Ikiru and not Seven Samurai. I always thought as being the key Kuroswa film.
